Site Upgrades and Focus Change - UPDATED!
Posted on 03.17.06 @ 7:50 pm (CST)

After some long thought and looking at what there is out there I have come to the conclusion that security related Live-CD distros are a dime a dozen now. I am proud of the fact that LAS Linux was one of the first and maintained a great focus on being a security distro and not a desktop with some security tools on it. But with the explosive growth of everyone making Live-CD distros I have come to a crossroads. Do I come out with the next generation LAS Linux with the same focus as previous ones? Or do I use LocalAreaSecurity.com to go in another direction still focused on InfoSec but more from a research standpoint? Others have also started InfoSec related podcasts in the time since the LAS Podcast first “aired”. So that is now being a little overdone too. Anyone have a suggestion as to the goals and focus we should pursue? It has been a fun 4+ years so far!

I will be redoing the site over the next few months and getting everything in place to tackle some exciting project(s). We are still looking for team members so please feel free to email me if interested and dedicated.

UPDATE - Thanks for all the comments and emails. I have decided to start working on finishing a version 6 of L.A.S. Linux due to the demand that still abounds. It is nice to know that people appreciate the work over the years. I am still looking for people to help get it done faster. So please email me if interested and dedicated to helping! In other related news I have upgraded the site to and an working to redo the theme and fix a few bugs caused from the upgrade.

  1. Could you please include the lastest firefox in your next version of las. The version you have now is 0.8. Also, could you please include a dsl toram command. It would make life so much more easy.

  2. Really Jascha? Awww man, this distro kicks ass above all others as far as fast, and stable. The other distros are usually at least 500MB, plus the bloat of programs that they contain.
Well, if you have other agendas, I hope they kick ass just like LAS. FWIW, I was waiting to see LAS 6.0 with an updated kernel and better wireless support.

Good Luck in your endeavors! Its been great while it lasted, but Im still going to use LAS for a while! Believe that!

  3. Thanks for the comment! I am not saying L.A.S. Linux is dead. Just that we are refocusing efforts to figure out the best way to make it new again and better than ever.

  5. I am taking a security class at a local college and your LAS Linux 0.5 is included with the book. My question is, is when you are in a shell within the LAS Linux 0.5 software, how can you do a screen print to a file. The instructor wants proof that we accomplished the exercises and he wants us to provide him with screen prints on file that we send him via E-mail. I need to provide him with this by Tuesday October 17th. I would really appreciate your assistance. Thank You.
